Pentagon to recall 400,000 furloughed workers

The move has the potential to bring back to work close to half of the approximately 800,000 federal workers furloughed last week, which could ease pressure on Congress and the White House to reach an agreement that will end the shutdown, now in its fifth day. A Pentagon memo on who can return to work says the list includes Defense Department employees involved in healthcare and suicide prevention, repair of weapons systems, training and supply, and human resources. Defense employees who work in commissaries, payroll, legal and administrative jobs and running military installations also are eligible to return to work. Employees who still cannot return to work include those in public affairs, information technology, civil works projects by the Army and other mid-level management jobs.
