Yoga Has Limited Menopause Benefits

Researchers randomly assigned 249 women, with an average age of 54, to either 12 weekly 90-minute sessions of yoga or to usual activities. The yoga included breathing exercises, 11 to 13 poses and deep relaxation with Yoga Nidra, a meditative practice. Compared with the usual activity group, the yoga group had improvements in insomnia symptoms, a common complaint of menopause. While hot flashes and night sweats declined in the yoga group, to 4.6 at the end of the study from 7.4 per day at its start, there were similar declines in the usual activity group, to 5.4 from 8.
